Cine Institute in Haiti
Cine Institute, Haiti’s one and only film school, was demolished by the recent 7.0 magnitude earthquake that ravaged the island. Luckily, several cameras were recovered from the rubble, and film students at the school are now using them to document the destruction for the world.
It is times like these that should serve to remind us of the democratizing potential and power of media. It is because of these students’ eyes, voices, and cameras that the rest of the world can get a better glimpse of theirs. Even in a part of the world that remains unjustly impoverished, media savviness can bring them greater visibility in the geopolitical arena - and inspire peoples and nations to provide the essential resources that are so desperately needed in the wake of such a natural disaster.
